The Christening

The Christening by Guy de Maupassant is a stark short story about custom, cruelty, and the destructive grip of alcohol. In a remote Breton village, a christening unfolds amid harsh winter weather and deeply rooted ritual, while a concerned outsider confronts the tension between tradition and compassion. Maupassant explores poverty, superstition, social indifference, and the consequences of treating human suffering as ordinary. Recommended for listeners who enjoy classic short fiction, dark realism, and morally unsettling stories.
